Photoshop's [Automate->Merge to HDR] feature said this image didn't have enough dynamic range, so I decided to do it myself.
I kind of suck at Photoshop. I don't like post processing that much. But I figured that I should just do it anyways.
So here are my steps:
1] Save 3 different .jpegs from one .CR2 image at different exposures for shadows, midtones and highlights.
2] Open in Photoshop.
3] Make a 3456 x 2304 document w/ 3 layers.
4] Put each image in its own layer.
5] Play w/ opacity percentage.
6] Get really disappointed.
7] Make some translucent gradients on half of the shadows and highlights images (sort of like a CPL).
8] Play w/ opacity some more.
9] Shift layer order around, then more opacity.
10] Layer->Flatten Image.
11] Play w/ Curves tool.
12] Lots of burn/dodge work to add contrast to trees and detail to the really bright parts of clouds.
13] Play a little more w/ Curves tool.
14] Play a little w/ Hue/Saturation tool.
15] Edn. ;D
I'm rather proud with this finished piece. What do you think?
Wow, I <3 how blue the sky looks. In that case however, my only suggestion would be to darken the grass a bit if that's the color you want the sky. The sky has this nice, bold color whereas the grass looks a little faded (compared to the sky). Other than that I lovelovelove this picture.
To make the grass a bolder color you could make a new layer, change it's properties to 'color burn', then lower the opacity to about 25% and fill it in with black. However, you just have to be careful that it's only on the grass. If it goes on any other part of the picture, you can use the eraser tool on the color burn layer and erase everything except the grass. You could also play with curves or use the channel mixer or the hue/saturation menu.

it looks great and all the post processing you've done is impressive. If uneeded, all you needed to do was go old school and use an ND grad, exposue a little longer than normal and bang you have this shot without any post processing. Still technically this is amazing work
Thanks. I just got the lens this morning, and its filter size is 77mm ( = expensive filters ;() but I think I might get one before I leave for St. Thomas.
Whoa. I kind of get that, but the only reason the sky is the way it is, is because the curves job I did to add contrast to the image (it was amazingly low contrast with all those crappy white gradients I put on it ) made it have really sweet blue-ness to it. So while I might do some work on the grass, I kind of like how surreal this photograph looks.. Thanks for the crit though.

That's because I made them somewhat translucent, so it wasn't just plain white, it was just a lame attempt at brightening the image. I'm going to shoot the same photo today with a tripod and bracket exposures to get better highlight detail.
When did it suddenly become cool to hate everything? It's a growing problem, especially in the entertainment world, and no one benefits from an increasingly hard to please, pessimistic audience.
